Has religion been replaced by Consumerism?
Do we as a society worship at the altar of Glamour, Money and Fashion?
The state of being envied is what constitutes glamour. And publicity is the process of manufacturing glamour. Being envied is a… form of reassurance. It depends precisely upon not sharing your experience with those who envy you. You are observed with interest but do not observe with interest- if you do, you will become less enviable. The spectator buyer is meant to envy herself as she will become if she buys the product…the publicity image steals her love of herself as she is, and offers it back to her for the price of the product…Glamour cannot exist without personal social envy being a common and widespread emotion.
-Ways of Seeing, John Berger
"We can't do anything to change the world until capitalism crumbles. In the meantime we should all go shopping to console ourselves."
"Sometimes, I feel so sick at the state of the world I can't even finish my second apple pie."
Wall and Piece, Banksy
Wow...this is great stuff! SO true! We Christians don't often like to hear things like this, though. We like to think we are just fine and not at all influenced by the current culture. Thanks for this!
